Trondheim is a town on the Trondheimer Fjord in central
Norway. The 11th-century Gothic Nidaros Cathedral has an ornate rose window and a complex western facade. Nearby is the Erkebispegården Museum with archaeological discoveries and sculptures, including gargoyles that were once attached to the cathedral. The Ringve Museum is a music museum in an old manor house with a barn.
Trondheim, Norway's third largest city is also one of the oldest in the world. Established as a trading post by the Vikings in AD 997, it was the capital of Norway until 1217, and new kings are still crowned. Constructed on the peninsula and connected to the mainland at its western end, Trondheim is the main town of Sør-Trøndelag County in central Norway. It is a popular stop on the Hurtigruten route, a coastal ferry that connects towns from
Bergen to Kirkenes, and its location on the Trondheimsfjord makes it a good base for fjord cruises. Like most of northern Norway, Trondheim has not had any darkness from mid-May to mid-July, and while it benefits from a mostly mild maritime climate, there is good skiing in the surrounding areas.

1. Cathedral of Nidaros
Established by King Olav Kyrre (1066-93) on the tomb of St. Olav, patron saint of Norway, the Nidaros Cathedral is widely regarded as the most beautiful church in Scandinavia. The Cathedral is the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world and one of the key tourist attractions of the region. Kings have been baptized and buried here, and it has been a condition of the Norwegian constitution since 1814 that the King be crowned at Trondheim Cathedral. The transept and the chapter house are of late Romanesque style, influenced by the Norman architecture of
England, while the long choir with its beautiful south doorway was designed in the 13th century, along with the massive nave and tower. After being ravaged by fire several times, the church was completely restored in the early 1900s.
2. Baklandet and Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge)
Cross the Nidelva River through the red arches of Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge) to the picturesque lanes and colorful old houses of the Bakklandet neighborhood. It feels like a small town, and the historic wooden riverside buildings have become small shops, galleries, cafes , and restaurants. Stroll along the river to see the houses on the other side. It's the most historic and atmospheric neighborhood in Trondheim.
3. Fjellseter Gråkallen
A fun day trip from Trondheim, and one of the most popular things to do in the winter, is to travel five miles west of the city to Fjellseter (367 meters), a popular ski resort with a ski jump. In the summer, hikers can enjoy the route leading to the summit of Gråkallen (555 meters) with excellent views of the Trondheimsfjord and the mountains along the Swedish border. You can also enter the hill on the Gråkallen electric railroad from St. Olavsgata or by bus.
4. Rockheim, Rockheim
Fans of pop and rock music will enjoy the trip down the Memory Lane and the chance to hear some of the greats of Norway. Collections of the museum are displayed along with interactive exhibits, videos and recordings. The permanent exhibition, The Time Tunnel, brings to life the modern Norwegian musical and cultural history of the 1950s through sound and performance recordings. Changing exhibitions concentrate on specific facets of music and culture. This is a museum where you can get interested, jamming with popular songs, releasing your inner graffiti artist, dancing, or creating your own remixes. The museum restaurant has a view of the city.
5. Palace of the Archbishop and Museum
The medieval Archbishop's Palace (Erkebispegården) is not only the oldest of its kind in Scandinavia, it is also one of the best preserved palaces of its kind in
Europe. The western wing of the palace dates back to the late 12th century and now houses a number of historical displays, including the Norwegian Crown Regalia display – a spectacular collection of Norway's dazzling crown jewels – as well as the Army and Resistance Museums, focusing on Trondheim's military history from Viking times to World War II.
6. National Museum of Decorative Arts
The National Museum of Decorative Arts houses a large collection of historical and current objects, including furniture, silver, glass, textiles, ceramics and designs dating back to the 15th century. The museum itself is a work of art, the interior of which was built in 1907 by the famous Belgian architect Henry van de Velde. Art lovers can also enjoy the Trondheim Museum of Art with its collection of Norwegian art dating back to the 1850s.
7. Museum of the Ringve
Visit the Ringve Museum, the Norwegian National Museum of Music and Music Instruments for a longer and broader view of Norwegian and European music. It houses two permanent exhibitions: the Manor House Museum, with instruments of European musical heritage, and the Barn Museum, with exhibits of modern sound and lighting technology.
8. Vitensenteret i Trondheim
The groundbreaking museum / science center of Trondheim makes the physical sciences and concepts of physics open and attractive to both adults and children. Hands-on innovative projects illustrate scientific concepts, and there are models for use and other immersive exhibits. More than just an educational experience, it's a fun museum to visit.
9. Tyholtårnet
Go to the observation deck at Tyholttårnet, a 124-metre-high radio tower, for a bird's eye view of the entire city. At a height of 80 metres, there is a revolving restaurant, Egon, where you can spend an hour revolving for a 360-degree panorama. If you're lucky enough to be there at the right time, this is an exceptional place to see the Northern Lights.
10. Munkholmen
Just over a kilometer away from Trondheim, in the Trondheimsfjord, is the fortified island of Munkholmen. During the summer, you can take a shuttle boat from Ravnkloa to visit the island, where you can see a well-preserved round tower belonging to the former Benedictine abbey of Nidarholm, founded in the 12th century. This site is now occupied by a fort built in 1658, the Gammel Festning, as well as more recent fortifications left behind by German occupiers during the Second World War, when it was used as an anti-aircraft gun station.
