1. Marienplatz

The gothic cathedral and parish church "Zu Unserer Lieben Frau" from the 15th century is and remains the unmistakable landmark of the city. But not everyone knows that massive church  is the resting place of emperors and even the devil is said to have come and gone here. The more than 500-year-old brick building is the seat of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising. One of the two almost 100-meter-high towers is accessible and offers a spectacular view over the city. 

2. Odeonsplatz

A tourist hotspot, Odeonsplatz is one of the famous squares in Munich. It is also the well-known site of Hitler’s Munich Putsch. The three large arches facing towards the square belong to the Feldherrnhalle, and near the large memorial in the distance is the Siegestor. The large yellow church on the left is the Theatinerkirche and is always worth a look inside. From Odeonsplatz you can walk in to the city center for some shopping or food.  As opposed to Marienplatz or Karlsplatz, Odeonsplatz is a calm square with very little hustle and bustle, being just a little further out of the centre than these two places. 3. Viktualienmarkt

In 1807, the farmer's market outgrew its location at the time, which was Marienplatz. It was moved to a nearby square, where it thrived and expanded. Today, covers 22,000 square meters and includes a butchers' hall, bakery, fish hall, and flower market in addition to its fruit and vegetable vendors. It's not just a place for locals to buy items for the night's dinner. Fresh breads and pastries, wheels of cheese, and cured meats are good picnic makings, and tables and benches provide a place for shoppers and visitors to sit while they eat sizzling sausages, hot pretzels, and other foods prepared in mobile kitchens.

4. Allianz Arena

The Allianz Arena in Fröttmaning is one of Germany's most modern and spectacular football stadiums. As the home ground of FC Bayern Munich, it shines in red on home match days. Outside the match days, there are special illuminations on various occasions, e.g. on St. Patrick's Day the arena shines in green or during advent as a huge Christmas present. The Arena was designed by architects Herzog & Meuron, and it is an architectural landmark in the north of the city, which also attracts many visitors on match-free days thanks to the guided tours on offer and the FC Bayern Erlebniswelt.

5. Frauenkirche

Whenever you visit Leipzig, there is a chance that something is happening on the market square. You're going to be able to get a glimpse of the locals' lives, many Leipzig visitors from around the world can also be seen here. During the winter, the market square is the location of Leipzig's  famous Christmas market. At other times there are weekly farmers markets and the Easter market, while during the Wave-Gothic-Treffen  which is the largest Gothic festival in the world, there are medieval themed stalls and side-shows on the square. 6. Botanical Gardens

Right next to Nymphenburg Palace are the Botanical Gardens of Munich, covering an area of more than 50 acres. The greenhouse complex is home to everything from palm trees to turtles in its beautifully tropical surroundings. 8. Odeonsplatz

The Nikolaikirche is known for playing an instrumental part in the non-violent movement that led to the fall of Berlin Wall. As early as 1982, the church organized peace services, demonstrating solidarity with the East German government and encouraging people to confront the Wall's injustices. Starting in late 1989, candlelit protests preceded the prayers of peace which culminated in October 1989 when nearly 70,000 people took to the streets to participate and which eventually led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Besides this pivotal role in the history of Germany, the Nikolaikirche also offers a wonderful interior dating back to 1797 with Romanesque and Gothic roots.

9. Münchner Residenz

Right in the heart of the city is the largest and most imposing city palace in Germany: the Munich Residenz. The Munich Residenz is without doubt one of the most impressive buildings in Munich. It extends over ten inner courtyards, is about five times as large as Marienplatz and has more than 130 rooms. Today the Munich Residenz is one of the most important museums in Europe and shows the life, work and above all the self-image of the Bavarian princes and kings at close quarters.

10. Neuschwanstein Castle

If you spend a few days in beautiful Munich, you should definitely plan a day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle. The world-famous castle is located in the small town of Füssen in the south of Bavaria, which can be easily reached from Munich by charter bus in 2 hours. Construction of the castle started in 1869, it was built for the Bavarian King Ludwig II. as an idealized idea of a knight's castle of the Middle Ages. King Ludwig himself lived in the castle for only a few months and died before the construction was completed.
