Kalmar is a city in the southern Swedish province of Kalmar län and historic province of Småland. The town is on Kalmarsund's Baltic Sea coast. From the 13th to 17th century, Kalmar was once one of Sweden's largest and most important cities. Kalmar was an episcopal seat in the middle ages,
and Kalmar Cathedral is a fine example of classical architecture. Over time Kalmar developed into a fortified, castle-centered city. After the Treaty of Roskilde in the 17th century, Kalmar's significance slowly declined, especially after industrialization was introduced in the 19th century. Today, this wonderful city on Sweden's south-east coast is one of the top locations for a great vacation in
Sweden.
